A new icon for Ullwater Bay

Located on the north east shore of Lake Ullswater about 2 miles from Pooley Bridge on Howtown Road, the new Ullswater yatch club will be a significant landmark for the surrounding Lakeside Community of Cumbria. Founded in 1958, The original yacht club is considered to be unrivalled in its facilities, both on and off the water. With over 200m of lake frontage, the new yacht club will continue this reputation with expanded facilities for the expected increase in membership over the next few years.

Site, Location and Context

The new yacht club will be located just north-east of the existing club house. The existing clubhouse will remain operational while the new club house is under construction. The new building will also be located approximately 30m away from the water’s edge at +147.33 topographic elevation. Structure hierarchy / Materials The new yacht club is primarily built from 2 story glu-lam wood post and beam structure. Due to flood level requirements, this wood structure is raised off the ground Level (datum starting at +147.33) and is placed on top of a concrete base. The lower floor is also supported by 600 mm diam. solid wood columns - these are constructed from reused telephone poles saw to the correct heights. The upper 2 storeys are clad in western red cedar and glass while the lower level base is over clad with local field stone.

Building Image - A Lakeside Villa

The new clubhouse is conceived in the spirit of lakeside nautical architecture - contemporary, transparent, visual dynamic, and streamlined, and clear in its function structure and form. Building Concept - Path to the water The building is designed around a pathway running through the building, directly connecting to the jetty, and going just beyond the water’s edge. A stair and lift are located along the pathway, connecting to the upper levels of the club house. The new building is 2 storeys, raised 5m above the ground level, allowing for boat storage underneath, and clearance during anticipated high floor waters.
